“Ovi”

Alexander Ovechkin (born 17th September 1985) is a Russian ice hockey winger. He has played all of his NHL career in Washington Capitals (2005 – today). He is currently captain of the Capitals. Ovechkin has won the Stanley Cup once. Ovechkin is considered by many as the greatest goal scorer in NHL history and is already the best Russian hockey player ever.

Early Career

Ovechkin started play in the Russian Super League (RSL) in Dynamo Moscow at the age of 16. He made his professional debut in the 2001-02 season. He was selected first overall in the 2004 NHL draft by Washington Capitals, but because NHL lockout (2004-05), he played one more season with Dynamo Moscow. Ovechkin played 152 games with Dynamo Moscow and made 36 goals and 32 assists.

Washington Capitals

Alexander Ovechkin made his NHL debut in 5.10.2005 against Columbus Blue Jackets – He immediately showed his skills and made two goals in a 3-2 victory. Ovechkin finished the 2005-06 season with style – he leaded all NHL rookies in goals, points and power-play goals. He finished third overall in the NHL in scoring and won Calder Trophy as best rookie of the NHL before another rising star Sidney Crosby.

In season 2007-08 Ovechkin captured Art Ross Trophy (most points in regular season) and Maurice Richard Trophy (most goals in regular season). He also signed 13-year contract extension with the Capitals on 10.1.2008.

On 5.1.2010, Ovechkin was named captain of the Capitals. With Ovechkin the Capitals continued to reach playoffs nearly every season, but they became to get reputation not getting further than the second round.

In season 2017-18 Ovechkin and the Capitals finally succeeded. They have been beaten by the Pittsburgh Penguins many times before, but this time they won in the 2nd round and after 13 seasons in the NHL, Ovechkin reached the Conference Finals in Playoffs. In the Conference Finals, they won Tampa Bay Lighting 4-3 and reached the Stanley Cup Finals. The Capitals got their first ever Stanley Cup victory in their 44-year history when they won Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 in the finals.

Ovechkin won Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs.

On 22.2.2020, Ovechkin scored his 700th career goal – he also won again Rocket Richard Trophy as regular season was postponed (co-winner with David Pastrnak – both had 48 goals).

Other interesting stuff

Alexander Ovechkin has already won Maurice Richard Trophy (most goals in regular season) 9 times, which is the NHL record (2008, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020), three Hart Memorial Trophies (2008,2009, 2013) for NHL’s most valuable player and one Conn Smythe Trophy (2018) as a MVP of the NHL playoffs. Alexander Ovechkin has been chosen to the NHL First All-Star Team 8 times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2019).

Alexander Ovechkin owns many NHL records and Washington Capitals records – his career still continues, so there is more to come for sure. He is for example the first person to win the Art Ross Trophy, Maurice Richard Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and Hart Trophy in a single season (2008). Alexander Ovechkin has won three World Championships Gold Medal with Russia (2008, 2012 and 2014). Ovechkin has always been ready to play at the World Championships for Russia and he is well known as a patriotic person.
