Torey Krug (born April 12th, 1991) is an American ice hockey player, who has played his professional career in the NHL with the Boston Bruins. The diminutive defenseman is known for his skills with puck handling and passing. He is a wonderful skater and does not avoid shot blocking. In international games, Krug has represented the US national team.

Minor and junior career

Krug’s player path started from Detroit Honeybaked minor team and he continued in Belle Tire midget team in Michigan. In season 2008-09, Krug played in Indiana Ice of USHL league. He scored 47 points in 59 games and played thirteen Clark Cup play-off games. Eventually Indiana Ice won the Clark Cup that season.

Krug attended Michigan State University in 2009 and played three seasons in CCHA. After the first season, he was elected in All-CCHA Rookie Team. His other awards during the CCHA included All-CCHA First Team selections in 2011 and 2012, All-CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman selections in 2011 and 2012 and CCHA Player of the Year in 2012.

Professional career

As Krug was not drafted, he raised interest as a free agent. In early 2012 Krug signed with the Boston Bruins and made an entry-level contract with the club. He made his NHL debut in April 2012. Krug played only two regular season games in NHL that season.

Season 2012-13 he spent mostly in Providence Bruins of AHL league. He had problems with his ankle in the early phase of the season. Krug played only one NHL regular season game during the season. However, he played fifteen play-off games, where he scored four goals and six points. Boston Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup finals, where they were defeated by Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

For the starters of season 2013-14, Krug scored his first NHL regular season goal. Krug played 79 regular season games and 12 play-off games during the season. He was elected to NHL All-Rookie Team of the season, but despite being a strong contender to the Calder Memorial Trophy for the best rookie, he did not get the award.

In season 2014-15, Krug had the best plus-minus in his career so far, record being +28. Krug has played very solid seasons all the time and he signed a four-year deal with the Bruins in summer 2016. In 2017, Krug had his shoulder operated. The 2018-19 season was a successful for the Bruins. They made it to the Stanley Cup finals – however, they were defeated by St. Louis Blues in seven games. Krug scored eighteen points (2+16) in 24 play-off games. Currently Krug is finishing his four-year contract with the Bruins.

International career

Krug played in USA national team that participated in 2015 World Championship tournament. The US team had a successful tournament and they finished third, winning the bronze medals. Krug played ten games in the tournament and scored five points.

Other interesting stuff

Krug has a university degree on political science from Michigan State University. He completed his studies during NHL off-seasons and graduated in 2017. Torey Krug got married with Melanie Flood in 2013.
