Anaheim Ducks is an ice hockey team based in Anaheim, California. Anaheim is a city located north-east from Los Angeles and it is best known for Disneyland resort. Apart from Ducks, Anaheim is also a home for baseball team Los Angeles Angels. Anaheim Mighty Ducks were founded in 1993 but originally the name of the team was Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Originally the team was owned by Disney Corporation, but the company sold the team to individual owners in 2005.

Basics

The team colours of Anaheim Ducks are black, metallic gold, orange and silver. The original name derives from Disney movie “The Mighty Ducks”. Ducks has won one Stanley Cup, which was in season 2006-07. They have also won two Conference championships. The home arena of Anaheim Ducks has always been Honda Center, which was completed for Ducks inaugural season that started in 1993. The capacity of Honda Center is appr. 17 000 seats.

Selanne & Kariya – Legendary duo

After 1993 expansion, Anaheim Ducks achieved their first play off spot in season 1996-97. At that time, the hockey fans around the world adored the excellent hockey performed by Teemu Selänne and Paul Kariya. You could say that Selänne and Kariya are Lennon and McCartney of ice hockey. Both being super-fast skaters and versatile players, you could never imagine what will happen.

Both Selänne and Kariya have said that their idea of hockey is similar, no matter that their personalities were completely different. For hockey fanatics, it is a bit sad that Kariya was not part of the team when Ducks won their Stanley Cup in 2007. At that time, Kariya played for Nashville Predators. Nevertheless, Selänne and Kariya remain lifelong friends. It is crystal clear that NHL stats of both ice hockey legends are incredible – especially for Selänne, who played extraordinarily long career.

Ryan Getzlaf – a playmaker

Other Anaheim Ducks legends include Ryan Getzlaf, who is long-time team captain and was an important part of the team during the championship season of 2006-07. Getzlaf has played over 1000 NHL regular season games and is not far from 1000 points milestone. He is an excellent playmaker and is also well known for his charity activities.

Giguere & the rest

Jean-Sebastien Giguere is another legend – a goalkeeper who played ten seasons for Anaheim Ducks. He was the 1st choice goalkeeper during the Stanley Cup season. Giguere is originally from Montreal, but he made his NHL debut in Hartford Whalers, which played in NHL until year 1997. Giguere finished his career in Colorado Avalanche. And we should not forget Scott Niedermayer, a great defenceman who played most of his career in New Jersey Devils, but joined Ducks in 2005 and finished his career there in 2010.

Mascot and other personnel

Currently Bob Murray is the General Manager of the team and Dallas Eakins is the head coach. Ducks also has an affiliate team in AHL, which is San Diego Gulls. The official mascot of the team is – not too surprisingly – a duck that is called “Wild Wing”. The Ducks jersey worn by the mascot has the number 93, referring to the inaugural season of the Ducks in NHL.
