Nashville Predators is an ice hockey team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The team was founded in 1998 after the owner of the franchise was granted an expansion spot in NHL with Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild. Before that, the owners searched for an existing NHL franchise to be relocated in Nashville, offering substantial sum of money for the relocation.
Basic information
The team colours of Nashville Predators are Predators gold, navy blue and white. Currently the General manager of Predators is David Poile. The head coach is John Hynes. Predators play their home matches in Bridgestone Arena. The capacity of the arena is approximately 17 000 seats in ice hockey matches. There are two minor league affiliate teams for Predators: Milwaukee Admirals in AHL league and Florida Everblades in ECHL league.
Short history
Nashville Predators did not make it to the post-season play offs during the first five years. After some limited post-season activity over the years, the new ownership group took over in 2008. Predators took their first playoff series win in season 2010-11. In 2016-17 season Predators was qualified to Stanley Cup finals but were defeated by Pittsburgh Penguins after six games. That is their biggest success up to date, along with one Presidents’ Trophy next year and two Division championships on two seasons.
The successful period lead by head coach Peter Laviolette came to an end, when – in the middle of a disappointing season – the club sacked Laviolette in January 2020 and hired John Hynes as a replacement.
Pekka Rinne – always reliable
The Finnish international goalkeeper Pekka Rinne has played all his NHL games in Nasvhille Predators. Rinne won the Vezina Trophy in 2018. He scored a goal in January 2020, being only 12th goalkeeper to do that in NHL history. Rinne has also played for Finnish national hockey team, getting one silver medal from 2014 games. Rinne does the butterfly style in his goaltending.
Shea Weber – Olympic champion
Two-time Olympic gold medalist from 2010 and 2014 games, Shea Weber played total of eleven seasons for Nashville Predators before being traded to Montreal Canadiens – Predators got P.K. Subban in exchange. Weber has always been eager to take part in national team activities and he has also gold medals from 2007 World championships and 2016 World cup.
Roman Josi – a Swiss rock
Like Pekka Rinne, also Swiss international defenceman Roman Josi has played all his NHL games for Nashville Predators – and currently he is the captain of the team. Being a very solid defender and having great passing ability, Josi was selected as MVP of year 2013 World championships. He has won two silver medals from World championships, in 2013 and 2018. In NHL, he has played three times in NHL All Star game.
Other noteworthy players
On the top of those mentioned before, some very good players have worn Predators shirt – some players for a shorter period of time. To name a few: Peter Forsberg, P.K. Subban, Paul Kariya, Kimmo Timonen and David Legwand have been part of the team.
