Ottawa Senators is an ice hockey team based in Ottawa. This Ottawa Senators is the second NHL franchise to use same name. Original Ottawa Senators was founded 1883 and had a famed history, with 11 Stanley Cups between 1917 – 34. Current Ottawa Senators was founded 1992. Ottawa Senators is a member of Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

Ottawa Senators Team History

As we wrote earlier, current Ottawa Senators is second one to use same name. Original Senators won 11 Stanley Cups, but financial losses forced the franchise move to St.Louis 1934. Season 1992-93 was first with new franchise. After first four seasons Ottawa Senators went to the NHL Playoffs eleven times a row (1996-97 – 2007-08). They did not win any Stanley Cups during that period, but season 2006-2007 they reached Stanley Cup Finals (Anaheim Ducks won Finals 4-1). Ottawa Senators have been solid team during these years, but have been criticized with poor playoffs success. Last three years (2017-20) Ottawa has been quite poor and they have not reached playoffs.

Currently, the General Manager of Ottawa Senators is Pierre Donon. The current head coach Denis John “D. J.” Smith was appointed to his position in 2019. The team is owned by Eugene Melnyk. Ottawa Senators has two minor league affiliates, those being Belleville Senators in AHL league and Brampton Beast in ECHL league.

Daniel Alfredsson – Swedish senator

Daniel Alfredsson played 17 seasons with Ottawa Senators. He played 1178 games with the Senators and made 1108 points (426+682). Alfredsson was 6th round draft pick (133rd overall) and that was big steal from Ottawa. 1996 Alfredsson won Calder Memorial Trophy as a Rookie of Year. Alfredsson holds the Senators records for regular season goals, assists and point. He also holds the Senators playoff records for most games played, goals and assists.

Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley part of CASH

When Ottawa Senators reached Stanley Cup Finals (2006-2007) their biggest weapon was CASH-line. That line was formed at season 2005-06 and it was one of the league’s top offensive lines and it included Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Jason Spezza played his first 11 NHL seasons with the Senators. He played 686 games with Senators and made 687 points (251+436). Dany Heatley started his NHL career with Atlanta Trashers, but moved to Ottawa Senators 2005. He and CASH-line was total success story and he made two times a row over 100 points at regular season (2005-06 103 points and 2006-07 105 points). Heatley had still Ottawa Senators franchise records for most goals in season (50) and most points in season (105). Small funny fact is that Dany Heatley made first ever NHL game-winning shootout goal.

Other famous names

Alexei Yashin was first draft pick in the history of Ottawa Senators (2nd overall 1992). Yashin played 6 seasons with the Senators and was one of the best players of the team. He also had continuous contract dispute problems with team and Senators even suspended Yashin for 1999-2000 season. Yashin played 504 games with the Senators and made 491 points (218+273). Erik Karlsson is one of the best defencemen in modern era of NHL. He has won James Norris Memorial trophy as a best defenceman of NHL twice (2012, 2015). Erik Karlsson played 9 seasons with Ottawa Senators (2009 – 18). Erik Karlsson played 627 games with Senators and made 518 points (126+392).
