Washington Team History

Washington Capitals joined the NHL in the 1974-75 season, along with the Kansas City Scouts (Kansas City Scouts played only two seasons after franchise relocated Denver, Colorado and became the Colorado Rockies). Washington Capitals was very poor team at the beginning and did not reach the NHL playoffs at first 8 seasons. After few good trades, the Caps became solid playoff team at the season 1982-83. That season starts series of 14 consecutive playoff appearances (1983-96).

Washington reached first time at Stanley Cup Finals season 1997-98 – Detroit Red Wings was too tough then and the Caps lost 0-4. The Caps continued to be solid playoff team, but way too often in playoffs, they lost first or second round. Season 2017-18 was the best season of organization. Washington Capitals reached Stanley Cup Finals and won Vegas Golden Knights 4-1.

Washington Capitals’ Owners and Staff

Currently, the General Manager of Washington Capitals is Brian MacLellan. The current head coach Todd Reirden was appointed to his position in 2018. The team is owned by company called Monumental Sports & Entertainment. Washington Capitals has two minor league affiliates, those being Hershey Bears in AHL league and South Carolina Stingrays in ECHL league.

Alexander Ovechkin – “Alexander the Great”

2004 NHL draft is famous with two great Russian players – Alexander Ovechkin was 1st draft by the Caps and 2nd draft was Evgeni Malkin by Pittsburgh Penguins. Alexander “Ovi” Ovechkin has been played 14 seasons with the Caps and he has won one Stanley Cup. Ovechkin has been great goal scorer throughout his career and he has won the Maurice Richard Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL’s leading goal scorer, nine times – this is an NHL-record. He has also been won 1 Conn Smythe Trophy, 3 Presidents’ Trophies, 3 Hart Memorial Trophies and many smaller trophies more. He has been captain of the Caps since 2010, he has been played 1152 games and made 1278 (706+572) points with the Capitals.

Nicklas Bäckström – Skilled passer

Nicklas Bäckström is a Swedish center and he was drafted by the Caps 2006 (4th overall). Bäckström is well known for his playmaking abilities and he has often been man behind Ovechkin goals. Bäckström has been played 12 seasons with the Caps and he has won 1 Stanley Cup. Bäckström has been played 956 games and made 927 points (243+684) points with the Capitals.

Other famous names

Peter Bondra was drafted very low in the 1990 NHL draft by the Caps (156th). He still became one of the profilic goal-scorers in the 1990s. Bondra played 14 seasons with the Capitals. He holds team records in short handed goals (32) and hat tricks (19). Olaf Kölzig played 15 seasons with the Caps organization. ”Olie the Goalie” was one of the keys, why the Caps reached 1997-98 Stanley Cup Finals. in 2000, Kölzig won Vezina Trophy as a best goalie of the NHL and played 15 seasons with the Caps organization. Mike Gartner was drafted in 1978 and he helped the Caps become a playoff contender in the 1980s. He played 19 seasons in NHL and his 10 first seasons with the Caps.
